Overview

Earlobe repair provides natural beauty for patients who desire aesthetically pleasing earlobes as well as the ability to wear earrings. Patients choose earlobe repair for various reasons, including bifid or cleft earlobes – a common congenital condition where the ear lobe is split into two parts.

While cleft earlobes are present from birth, split earlobes can result from wearing heavy, large earrings or wide gauges.

Earlobe surgery, also known as bifid earlobe repair, provides patients a quick, simple way to restore or create naturally beautiful earlobes.

How To Repair A Torn Ear Lobe - Dr. Deborah Yu

What to Expect

Earlobe surgery is a quick, minor surgical procedure that comes with little to no downtime. Your treatment will be tailored to your specific earlobe injury or deformity, with the goal of delivering a look that gives you the confidence to wear your hair back with pride.

Split or bifid earlobe repair can fix a torn or split earlobe caused by a birth defect or the weight of heavy earrings. It involves the following steps:

  • Our surgeons will assess the split and remove any scar tissue to create smooth edges that can heal together properly.
  • Local anesthetic is used to prevent pain during the procedure.
  • The two sides of the torn earlobe are stitched together using absorbable sutures that don't need removal.
  • The sutured earlobe is then dressed with gauze and tape to hold it in place while healing.
  • Proper aftercare is important during the healing period. We recommend keeping the area clean and protected until fully healed, usually around 6-8 weeks.
  • Once healed, the earlobe should be free of splits or tears and the two sides seamlessly joined back together.
  • Wearing heavy earrings is discouraged after repair to prevent re-tearing the delicate tissue. Most patients can resume wearing lighter earrings after about two months.
  • In severe cases where a large amount of tissue is missing, a graft may be taken from behind the ear to reconstruct the earlobe.

Recovery &
Results

Earlobe surgery is a quick procedure and most patients are able to resume their normal activities immediately following the procedure. You may notice mild pain for a few days. Complete healing from earlobe surgery may take from 2-6 months, at which point you should be able to pierce or re-pierce your earlobe and resume wearing earrings with renewed confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions About Earlobe Surgery

What does earlobe surgery involve?

Earlobe surgery, or otoplasty, involves reshaping or reconstructing the earlobe to correct deformities or defects. Some common procedures are earlobe reduction, tear repair, reconstruction after injury, and correcting enlarged holes from gauging.

How is earlobe surgery performed?

Earlobe surgery is typically done on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. The surgeon makes small incisions to access the damaged area, removes any scar tissue, reshapes the earlobe tissue, and closes the incisions with stitches. In some cases, a skin graft may be taken to rebuild part of the earlobe.

What is the recovery time after earlobe surgery?

Recovery time is usually around 6-8 weeks. Stitches are removed or dissolved in 1-2 weeks. The ear will be tender and swollen at first so headbands are recommended to avoid irritation. After 6-8 weeks, the earlobe should be fully healed.

Will I have visible scarring?

The incisions are made right along the edge of the earlobe to hide any scarring. In most cases, the scar should be barely visible once fully healed. Proper aftercare can minimize scarring.

When can I wear earrings again?

For repaired tears, piercings should not be worn for at least 2 months after surgery to allow proper healing. After 2 months, lightweight earrings can typically be worn again.
